Fabio Maestri

Fabio Maestri gained his diploma in Piano, with full marks and honours. Initially a self-taught composer, he then studied and completed a postgraduate course taught by Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Rome). He was a student of Franco Ferrara in the Orchestral Conductors’ course at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena in 1979.
His compositions have been performed by soloists such as Fabbriciani, Ancillotti and Scarponi, published by Ricordi, Ricordi – France and BMG, broadcast on the radio (Radio 3), and given awards and commendations in various competitions and festivals: Filarmonica Umbra (1979), Venezia Opera Prima (1981), “G. B. Viotti” in Vercelli (1981), Ente Concerti di Belveglio (1982) and the Acanthes contest in Paris (1983). He has edited several revisions of works by Pergolesi, Handel, Giovanni Battista Martini, Morlacchi, Vaccaj and Haydn.
From 1984 to 1990, he was assistant to the Composition course taught by Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. As a conductor, he has conducted at the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale in Spoleto, at the International Courses in Lanciano, the Sagra Musicale Umbra, the May Music Festival in Florence, the Festival of Fermo, the Operaincanto Festival (Umbria), the Belcanto Festival Dordrecht (Netherlands), the Opéra de Nice, the Atelier Lirique de Tourcoing (France), the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Festival of Nations (Città di Castello), the Ravenna Festival and the Teatro Massimo in Palermo; he has been a guest of the Sanremo Symphonic Orchestra, the Abruzzo Symphonic Institute, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Marche, the Pomeriggi Musicali Orchestra (Milan), the Lazio Regional Orchestra, the “Tito Schipa” Symphony Orchestra in Lecce, the Teatro San Carlo Orchestra (Naples), the Symphony Orchestra of Sicily, the Orchestre Philarmonique de Nice, the Petruzzelli Orchestra (Bari), the RAI National Symphony Orchestra (Turin), and the Regional Orchestra of Tuscany (Florence). He has been very active in the performance of contemporary music and has directed on several occasions at the Venice Biennale, the “Musica d’oggi” Festival, the Pontino Festival, the Nuova Consonanza Festival, the Villa Medici Festival (Rome), the Philharmonic Academy of Rome (Teatro Olimpico), the Sinopoli Festival (Taormina), Rai New Music (Torino), and the Play.it! Festival (Florence, ORT).
He has conducted world premieres by composers including: Panni, Pennisi, Donatoni, Bortolotti, Brouwer, Manzoni, Galante, Cardi, Ambrosini, Sbordoni, Tutino, Betta, Del Corno, Boccadoro, D’Amico, Dall’Ongaro, Pedini, Vacca and Panfili. He has produced 19 commercial recordings, ranging from 17th-century music to contemporary works.
